Kremena Chipilova’s dark, surreal painting “The Gift of Death” [Oil on ACM panel, 12x16’’] for our recent Beautiful Bizarre Magazine exhibition ‘Secret Longings’ at COREY HELFORD GALLERY .
About the painting: “I chose the name “The Gift of Death” because it can be interpreted in different ways, just like the painting itself. We all know what “death” is, but the attitudes we have towards it iare different for each of us, and can also vary with the stages and situations in life we have. So, I want the viewer to also bring their own private and secret thoughts, longings and fears to experiencing this painting. While, at first glance, the painting extends classical motifs like “Memento Mori”, ‘Vanitas’ and “Death and the Maiden” about the inevitability of death, it is also about choices - you can see Death offering a flower as a gift, but what does this gift bring? Is it just a reminder of our own mortality or something else? How will she accept the gift, or will she even accept it? These are questions for the viewers to decide.”
